Traveling through Samaria, territory most Jews avoided, Jesus, tired from His journey, sits at Jacob’s well around noon. A Samaritan woman comes to draw water, and Jesus asks her for a drink, startling her, since Jews typically had no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus tells her that if she knew who was asking, she would have asked Him instead for “living water,” “hydor zon” in Greek, water that becomes in the drinker “a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” When Jesus reveals that He knows she has had five husbands and is not married to the man she currently lives with, she recognizes Him as a prophet and raises a question about proper worship.
Jesus tells her that true worship is not confined to one location, whether Jerusalem or Samaria’s mountain, but happens “in spirit and in truth,” since “God is a Spirit.” When she mentions that the Messiah is coming, Jesus tells her plainly, “I that speak unto thee am he.” She leaves her water pot and runs to tell the whole town, and many Samaritans come to believe in Jesus, first because of her testimony, and then because they hear Him themselves, declaring Him “the Christ, the Saviour of the world.”
Returning to Galilee, Jesus is welcomed by the Galileans who had seen His miracles in Jerusalem. A nobleman from Capernaum begs Jesus to heal his dying son, and Jesus simply tells him, “Go thy way; thy son liveth.” The man believes and departs, and learns along the way that his son was healed at the exact hour Jesus spoke those words, leading his entire household to believe.
Jesus crossed every social and cultural boundary of His day to speak honestly with a woman most religious people would have avoided entirely. Her transformed life, and the many Samaritans who came to believe because of her testimony, shows how far the reach of Jesus’ grace was always meant to extend.
