Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews, comes to Jesus by night, acknowledging that He must be a teacher sent from God because of the signs He performs. Jesus responds directly, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” The Greek phrase here, “gennao anothen,” can mean both “born again” and “born from above,” a double meaning that genuinely confuses Nicodemus, who asks how a grown man can possibly enter his mother’s womb a second time. Jesus clarifies that this new birth comes “of water and of the Spirit,” comparing the Spirit’s work to the wind, unseen yet unmistakably real in its effect.
Jesus points back to Moses lifting up the bronze serpent in the wilderness, explaining that “even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” This leads directly into the most quoted verse in the entire Bible. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Jesus explains that He came not to condemn the world, but to save it, and that judgment comes through people’s own response to the light, whether they love darkness or come to the light.
Meanwhile, John the Baptist continues baptizing, and when his own disciples grow concerned that people are now flocking to Jesus instead, John responds with striking humility. “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John explains that he is simply the friend of the bridegroom, rejoicing at the bridegroom’s voice, content to see Jesus receive greater honor than himself, since Jesus comes from above and is above all.
Nicodemus came to Jesus quietly, at night, unsure of what he was really looking for. Jesus met his confusion with one of the clearest, most far-reaching explanations of salvation in the entire Bible. Genuine, honest questions, even asked hesitantly under cover of darkness, are never turned away by Jesus.
