John opens with striking, cosmic language. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Greek word for this is “logos,” meaning word, reason, or divine self-expression. Everything was made through Him, and in Him was life and light, a light that shines in darkness which the darkness has never overcome. John the Baptist is introduced as a witness sent to testify of this light, though he himself was not the light.
John describes the astonishing moment this eternal Word entered human history. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” To everyone who receives Him and believes in His name, He gives “power to become the sons of God,” a birth that comes not of blood or human will, but of God Himself.
John the Baptist testifies plainly that he is not the Christ, but the voice crying in the wilderness preparing the way of the Lord. Seeing Jesus approach, John declares, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” Andrew, one of John’s disciples, follows Jesus and brings his brother Simon Peter, whom Jesus renames Cephas. Jesus then calls Philip, who brings Nathanael, and when Jesus reveals He already saw Nathanael under a fig tree before Philip called him, Nathanael declares, “Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.”
John begins his entire Gospel by establishing something the other Gospels simply assume, that Jesus existed before creation itself and is fully God. Everything that follows in this book, every miracle and teaching, flows directly out of this staggering claim, that eternal God chose to become flesh and dwell among ordinary people.
