Very early on the first day of the week, women arrive at the tomb with spices, only to find the stone rolled away and the body gone. Two men in shining garments ask them, “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen,” reminding them of Jesus’ own words predicting exactly this. The women report this to the apostles, who dismiss it as nonsense, though Peter runs to the tomb himself and finds it just as they described.
That same day, two disciples walking to the village of Emmaus are joined by Jesus Himself, though “their eyes were holden that they should not know him.” Hearing their sorrow over recent events, Jesus explains from Moses and all the prophets everything concerning Himself. As evening falls, they urge Him to stay, and as He breaks bread at the table, their eyes are opened, “dianoigo” in Greek, meaning to be thoroughly opened, and they recognize Him just as He vanishes from their sight. They immediately return to Jerusalem, saying to each other, “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way?”
While reporting this to the eleven, Jesus Himself appears among them, showing His hands and feet to prove He is not merely a spirit, and eating a piece of broiled fish before them. He opens their understanding of the Scriptures, explaining that His suffering, death, and resurrection, along with the preaching of repentance and remission of sins to all nations, were all written beforehand, and that they are witnesses of these things. He promises to send “the promise of my Father” upon them, and instructs them to wait in Jerusalem until they are endued with power from on high. Leading them out to Bethany, Jesus blesses them, and is carried up into heaven while they worship Him, returning to Jerusalem with great joy, continually praising God in the temple.
The two travelers on the road to Emmaus walked for miles beside the risen Jesus without recognizing Him, yet their hearts burned within them the whole time He spoke. Sometimes Jesus is closer to us in our grief and confusion than we realize, and recognition often comes not through dramatic proof, but through simply staying near Him long enough to see clearly.
