As chief priests plot to kill Jesus, Satan enters Judas Iscariot, who agrees with them to betray Jesus for money. At the Passover meal, Jesus tells His disciples He has earnestly desired to eat this meal with them before His suffering, then takes bread and wine, declaring, “this is my body which is given for you… this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you,” the Greek word for this covenant being “diatheke.” A dispute arises among the disciples about who is greatest, and Jesus teaches that true greatness looks like serving others, noting that He Himself is “among you as he that serveth.” He warns Peter that Satan desires to sift him like wheat, but that He has prayed for Peter’s faith not to fail, though Peter will still deny Him three times before the rooster crows. Going to the Mount of Olives, Jesus tells His disciples to pray that they not enter into temptation, then withdraws to pray Himself, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” His sweat becomes “as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground,” while His disciples sleep instead of watching with Him. Judas arrives with a crowd and betrays Jesus with a kiss. When a disciple cuts off the ear of the high priest’s servant, Jesus heals it, His last recorded miracle before the cross, and is led away. Peter follows at a distance, and just as Jesus predicted, denies knowing Him three times before the rooster crows. Turning, Jesus looks directly at Peter, who remembers the Lord’s word and weeps bitterly. The men holding Jesus mock and beat Him through the night, and at daybreak, He is brought before the council, where He affirms that He is the Son of God, sealing the religious leaders’ determination to bring Him before Pilate.
Even facing betrayal and denial from the very men closest to Him, Jesus still prayed specifically for Peter’s faith to survive the coming failure. That single detail, praying for someone even before they fail Him, reveals a compassion that anticipates our weakness rather than waiting to respond only after we stumble.
