The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Redemption” it comes from the Greek Word “apolytrosis” which means “redemption, deliverance.”
A poor widow gives almost nothing by the world’s standards, and Jesus says it’s actually everything. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Luke 21.
Watching people cast their gifts into the temple treasury, Jesus notices a poor widow put in two small copper coins, and tells His disciples she has given more than all the wealthy givers, since they gave out of their abundance, while she, out of her poverty, gave everything she had to live on. When some remark on the temple’s beautiful stones, Jesus predicts its complete destruction, “there shall not be left one stone upon another.”
Asked when this will happen, Jesus warns of coming deception, wars, earthquakes, and persecution, but insists these are not immediately the end. He warns specifically of Jerusalem being surrounded by armies as the sign to flee, describing “great distress in the land,” and Jerusalem being “trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” He then describes His own future coming with power and great glory, “in a cloud,” and tells His followers that when these things begin, they should look up, “for your redemption draweth nigh.” The Greek word for this redemption is “apolytrosis.”
Jesus teaches the parable of the fig tree again, that budding leaves signal summer is near, just as these signs signal the kingdom of God drawing near. He warns His disciples to watch and pray continually, so that their hearts are not weighed down with excess or the cares of daily life, catching them unprepared like a trap. Luke notes that Jesus spent His days teaching in the temple and His nights on the Mount of Olives, with all the people coming early each morning to hear Him.
The widow’s two small coins and Jesus’ instruction to watch and pray share the same underlying lesson, faithfulness measured by genuine wholehearted devotion, not by outward size or impressive appearance. Whether giving or simply waiting for His return, God consistently values complete, sincere trust over anything merely visible or convenient.
