Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector and a rich man, climbs a sycomore tree in Jericho to see Jesus over the crowd, since he is too short to see otherwise. Jesus stops beneath the tree and tells him to come down immediately, since He intends to stay at his house that day. The crowd murmurs that Jesus has gone to be a guest with a sinner, but Zacchaeus stands and declares he will give half his goods to the poor and repay fourfold anyone he has wrongly overcharged. Jesus responds, “This day is salvation come to this house… For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” The Greek word for seek here is “zeteo.”
As Jesus approaches Jerusalem, He tells a parable of a nobleman who leaves his servants money, called minas, to invest while he travels to receive a kingdom, later rewarding those who invested wisely and rebuking the servant who hid his mina out of fear, taking it away and giving it to the one who had gained the most, since “unto every one which hath shall be given.”
Jesus sends two disciples ahead to bring a colt for Him to ride into Jerusalem, and as He approaches, the whole crowd of disciples praises God joyfully for the mighty works they have seen, crying, “Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord.” When Pharisees ask Jesus to rebuke them, He responds that if they kept silent, the very stones would cry out. Seeing the city, Jesus weeps over it, foretelling its coming destruction because it did not recognize “the time of thy visitation.” Entering the temple, He drives out those buying and selling, declaring it should be a house of prayer rather than a den of thieves, and teaches there daily despite the religious leaders seeking to destroy Him.
Zacchaeus never asked Jesus for anything. He simply wanted a glimpse from a distance, and Jesus invited Himself into his home anyway. That single encounter transformed a man known for cheating others into someone eager to give generously and make things right, proof of how thoroughly an encounter with Jesus can change a life.
