Jesus warns His disciples that offenses will inevitably come, but pronounces serious warning on whoever causes a little one to stumble, and instructs them to forgive a repentant brother “seven times in a day” if necessary. When the apostles ask Jesus to increase their faith, He responds that faith even as small as a mustard seed could uproot a tree and plant it in the sea, then reminds them that even faithful service is simply their duty, not grounds for special pride.
Traveling toward Jerusalem, ten lepers call out to Jesus for mercy from a distance. Jesus tells them to show themselves to the priests, and as they go, they are cleansed. Only one, a Samaritan, turns back, glorifying God with a loud voice, falling on his face at Jesus’ feet to give thanks, “eucharisteo” in Greek. Jesus asks where the other nine are, and tells the man, “thy faith hath made thee whole,” noting pointedly that this outsider was the only one who returned to give glory to God.
Asked by Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus responds that it does not come with visible observation, since “the kingdom of God is within you.” He warns His disciples of a coming day when the Son of man will be revealed suddenly, like lightning flashing across the sky, comparing that day to the sudden judgment that fell in the days of Noah and of Lot, when people were caught completely unprepared in the middle of ordinary life. He warns that on that day, two people may be together, one taken and one left, urging complete readiness rather than complacency.
Ten men received the exact same healing, yet only one returned with genuine gratitude, and notably, he was the outsider rather than one of Jesus’ own people. Receiving a blessing and genuinely recognizing its source with thankfulness are two different responses, and Jesus clearly noticed which one was missing from the other nine.
