Jesus warns His disciples against the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, assuring them that nothing hidden will remain covered forever, and that they need not fear those who can kill the body, since even the sparrows are cared for by God, and the very hairs of their heads are numbered. He warns of the seriousness of denying Him before others, and reassures them that the Holy Spirit will teach them what to say when persecuted.
When a man in the crowd asks Jesus to settle an inheritance dispute with his brother, Jesus refuses to arbitrate and instead warns against covetousness, telling the parable of a rich man whose land produces so abundantly that he plans to build bigger barns to store it all, saying to himself, “Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” God responds, “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee.” Jesus concludes that this is the fate of anyone who lays up treasure for themselves but is “not rich toward God,” using the Greek word “plouteo,” meaning to be wealthy or abundant.
Jesus then tells His disciples not to worry about food or clothing, pointing to the ravens and the lilies, neither of which labor, yet are cared for by God, and urges them instead to “seek ye the kingdom of God,” promising that necessities will be provided. He calls them to be like servants watching for their master’s return, ready at any moment, and warns that His coming will bring division even within families, since not everyone will respond the same way to His message. He urges the crowd to discern the present time as clearly as they read the weather, and to settle matters quickly before facing judgment.
The rich fool’s mistake wasn’t wealth itself, but building his entire sense of security around it while ignoring his relationship with God completely. Being rich toward God, not merely accumulating comfort for ourselves, is what Jesus points to as the measure of a life well spent.
