A lawyer tries to test Jesus, and gets a story about an unlikely hero instead. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Luke 10.
Jesus appoints seventy others and sends them out ahead of Him in pairs, instructing them to travel light, heal the sick, and proclaim that the kingdom of God has come near, warning of serious consequences for towns that reject them. When the seventy return rejoicing that even devils are subject to them, Jesus rejoices in the Spirit, thanking His Father for revealing these things to the humble rather than the wise and prudent.
A lawyer stands up to test Jesus, asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. When Jesus points him to the law, love God completely and love your neighbor as yourself, the lawyer, seeking to justify himself, asks, “And who is my neighbour?” The Greek word for neighbor is “plesion,” meaning one who is near. Jesus responds with the parable of a man beaten and left half dead on the road to Jericho, passed by a priest and a Levite, but rescued and cared for generously by a Samaritan, a member of a group most Jews despised. Jesus asks which of the three proved to be a neighbor, and the lawyer, unable even to say “Samaritan,” answers, “He that shewed mercy on him.” Jesus tells him, “Go, and do thou likewise.”
Jesus arrives at the home of Martha and her sister Mary. While Martha is distracted with much serving, Mary sits at Jesus’ feet listening to His teaching. When Martha complains that Mary has left her to serve alone, Jesus gently responds, “Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
The lawyer wanted a technical definition of who counted as his neighbor. Jesus responded with a story showing that being a neighbor is about action, not category, crossing every expected boundary to show mercy. And Martha’s story reminds us that even good, busy service can crowd out the one thing that matters most, simply sitting with Jesus.
