Jesus sends His twelve disciples out to preach the kingdom and heal the sick, giving them power and authority over all devils. Herod, hearing reports about Jesus, is perplexed and seeks to see Him. When the disciples return, Jesus withdraws with them, but the crowds follow, and He teaches them, heals the sick, and feeds five thousand men with just five loaves and two fish, with twelve baskets left over. Praying alone with His disciples nearby, Jesus asks who the crowds say He is, then asks directly, “But whom say ye that I am?” Peter answers, “The Christ of God.” Jesus begins teaching plainly that He must suffer, be rejected, killed, and rise on the third day, and that anyone who wants to follow Him must deny themselves and take up their cross daily. About eight days later, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain to pray, and His appearance is transfigured, His clothing becoming dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appear speaking with Him about His coming death, and a voice from a cloud declares, “This is my beloved Son: hear him.” Coming down the mountain, Jesus heals a boy tormented by a violent spirit that the other disciples could not cast out, and again predicts His coming betrayal, though the disciples do not understand. When an argument breaks out among them about who is greatest, Jesus sets a child beside Him, teaching that whoever receives a child in His name receives Him. A Samaritan village refuses to welcome Jesus, and when James and John want to call down fire on them, Jesus rebukes them instead. As they travel, several people express interest in following Jesus, but He responds with sobering honesty about the immediate, total commitment such a decision requires.
Peter’s confession, that Jesus is the Christ, comes right in the middle of a chapter packed with miracles and glory, yet Jesus immediately turns the conversation toward suffering and a cross. Recognizing who Jesus truly is has always come bundled together with understanding exactly what following Him will cost.
