The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Astonished” it comes from the Greek Word “thambos” which means “astonishment, amazement.”
A fisherman who caught nothing all night suddenly can’t haul in his net. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Luke 5.
Teaching by the Lake of Gennesaret, Jesus gets into Simon’s boat to address the crowd, then tells Simon to launch out into deep water and let down his nets. Simon protests that they toiled all night and caught nothing, but obeys anyway, and the resulting catch is so enormous that their nets begin to break, requiring help from another boat, and both boats nearly sink under the weight. Astonished, “thambos” in Greek, Simon Peter falls at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Jesus tells him not to fear, since from now on he will catch men, and Peter, James, and John leave everything to follow Him.
Jesus cleanses a man full of leprosy with a touch, and heals a paralyzed man lowered through a roof by his friends, first forgiving his sins, then healing his body to prove His authority to do both, leaving the crowd amazed, saying, “We have seen strange things to day.” Jesus calls Levi the tax collector, who leaves everything immediately to follow Him and hosts a great feast with many tax collectors and sinners.
When Pharisees and scribes criticize Jesus for eating with such company, He responds that He came to call sinners to repentance, not the righteous. Questioned about why His disciples do not fast as often as John’s disciples or the Pharisees, Jesus explains that guests do not fast while the bridegroom is still with them, and that new wine requires new wineskins, since putting new wine into old skins would burst them completely.
Simon Peter’s response to the miraculous catch wasn’t excitement about the fish. It was overwhelming awareness of his own sinfulness in Jesus’ presence. Genuine encounters with who Jesus really is often produce exactly that reaction, humbling before they ever become comfortable.
