Luke carefully dates the beginning of John’s ministry by naming the reigning rulers of the time, then describes John preaching “the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins” throughout the region around the Jordan, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy of a voice crying in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord. John addresses the crowds directly, warning them not to rely on their heritage as children of Abraham, and calling for genuine fruit, “metanoia” in Greek, meaning repentance or a true change of mind, demonstrated through practical generosity, honesty in tax collecting, and contentment among soldiers rather than extortion.
The people wonder whether John himself might be the Christ, but he insists that one mightier is coming, whose shoes he is not worthy to untie, who will baptize with the Holy Ghost and with fire. When Jesus comes to be baptized along with the rest of the people, “the heaven was opened, and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.”
Luke then records Jesus’ genealogy, tracing backward through Joseph all the way to Adam, “which was the son of God,” a structure distinct from Matthew’s forward-moving genealogy through Abraham, emphasizing Jesus’ connection to all humanity rather than only to Israel. Jesus begins His ministry at about thirty years of age.
Luke’s genealogy traces all the way back to Adam rather than stopping at Abraham, quietly emphasizing that Jesus came for the whole human family, not just one nation. That detail fits Luke’s larger theme throughout his Gospel, a Savior whose reach extends to everyone, regardless of background.
