A decree from Caesar Augustus requires everyone to register in their ancestral city, bringing Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the city of David, exactly as prophecy required. While there, Mary gives birth to Jesus and wraps him in swaddling clothes, laying him in a manger “because there was no room for them in the inn.” Nearby, shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night are suddenly surrounded by an angel announcing, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy… For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” A multitude of the heavenly host joins in praise, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” The Greek word for this peace is “eirene.” The shepherds hurry to Bethlehem, find the baby exactly as described, and spread the word, while Mary “kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.” Eight days later, Jesus is circumcised and named, and when the days of purification are complete, Mary and Joseph bring him to the temple. There, a devout man named Simeon, who had been promised he would not die before seeing the Lord’s Christ, takes Jesus in his arms and blesses God, declaring he can now depart in peace, having seen God’s salvation. An elderly prophetess named Anna also gives thanks and speaks of the child to everyone looking for redemption in Jerusalem. When Jesus is twelve, His family travels to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. On the way home, Mary and Joseph realize Jesus is missing, and after searching anxiously for three days, they find him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions, astonishing everyone with his understanding. When His mother expresses her worry, Jesus responds, “wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” He returns home with them and remains subject to them, growing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
The birth of the Savior of the world happened in the most humble circumstances imaginable, a feeding trough in a small town, announced first to ordinary shepherds rather than kings or priests. God’s greatest moments in Scripture rarely arrive with the fanfare the world expects.
