Very early on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bring spices to anoint Jesus’ body, wondering along the way who will roll away the heavy stone from the tomb’s entrance. Arriving, they find the stone already rolled away, and entering the tomb, they see a young man clothed in a long white garment, who tells them not to be afraid. “Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here.” The Greek word for this rising is “egeiro,” meaning to be raised up or awakened. The young man instructs them to tell the disciples, and Peter specifically, that Jesus goes before them into Galilee, where they will see Him just as He had told them.
The women flee from the tomb, trembling and amazed, initially too afraid to say anything to anyone. In the fuller account of that day, Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene, who tells the mourning disciples, though they do not believe her. He then appears to two disciples walking in the country, who likewise are not believed when they report it. Finally, Jesus appears to the eleven themselves as they sit eating, rebuking their unbelief and hardness of heart for not believing those who had seen Him risen.
Jesus commissions them with far-reaching authority. “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” He promises that signs will accompany those who believe. After speaking with them, Jesus is received up into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, and the disciples go out and preach everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through accompanying signs.
Mark’s Gospel began with urgent, immediate action, and it closes the same way, disciples sent out immediately to preach to the whole world. The resurrection was never meant to be a private comfort held quietly. It was always meant to move, just as Jesus moved throughout this entire Gospel, out into every corner of the world.
