A Roman centurion, watching Jesus die, says something no one expected to hear from him. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Mark 15.
Jesus is bound and delivered to Pilate, who asks if He is the King of the Jews, and Jesus answers, “Thou sayest it.” Pilate, aware the chief priests have delivered Jesus out of envy, offers the crowd a choice between releasing Jesus or a rebel named Barabbas, and stirred up by the chief priests, the crowd demands Barabbas be released and Jesus crucified. Pilate hands Jesus over to be scourged, and the soldiers mock Him with a purple robe and a crown of thorns, striking Him and spitting on Him before leading Him away.
Simon of Cyrene is compelled to carry Jesus’ cross to Golgotha, where He is crucified between two thieves at the third hour, with an inscription above Him reading, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.” Passersby, chief priests, and scribes mock Him as He hangs there. At the sixth hour, darkness covers the land until the ninth hour, when Jesus cries out, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani,” meaning, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” The Greek word for this forsaking is “enkataleipo.” Jesus cries out again with a loud voice and dies.
At that moment, the veil of the temple tears in two from top to bottom. A Roman centurion standing directly opposite Jesus, watching how He died, declares, “Truly this man was the Son of God.” Joseph of Arimathaea, a respected member of the council, boldly asks Pilate for Jesus’ body, and after confirming with the centurion that Jesus is truly dead, wraps the body in fine linen and lays it in a tomb cut out of rock, rolling a stone against the entrance while Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses watch where He is laid.
It is striking that a Roman centurion, an outsider with no religious stake in the matter, is the one who recognizes and declares who Jesus truly is, simply by watching how He died. Sometimes the clearest recognition of Jesus comes from unexpected witnesses, watching honestly rather than looking for reasons to dismiss Him.
