The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Watch” it comes from the Greek Word “gregoreo” which means “to watch, to stay alert.”
Jesus predicts the temple’s destruction, and His disciples want to know exactly when. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Mark 13.
Leaving the temple, a disciple marvels at its massive stones, and Jesus predicts that not one stone will be left upon another. Sitting privately on the Mount of Olives, Peter, James, John, and Andrew ask when this will happen and what sign will mark it. Jesus warns first about deception, false Christs, wars, and earthquakes, calling these merely “the beginning of sorrows.” He warns of coming persecution and betrayal, even from family members, but promises that “he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved,” and that the gospel must first be preached to all nations.
Jesus describes a specific coming sign, “the abomination of desolation,” urging those in Judaea to flee to the mountains immediately when they see it, followed by tribulation unlike anything before or since. He warns against being deceived by false Christs performing signs and wonders, insisting that when He actually returns, it will be unmistakable, the sun darkened, the stars falling, and the Son of man coming “in the clouds with great power and glory,” gathering His elect from every corner of the earth. Jesus teaches the parable of the fig tree, that budding leaves signal summer is near, just as these signs signal His coming is near, though He adds a crucial limitation. “Of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.” The Greek word for staying alert through this uncertainty is “gregoreo.” He closes with the parable of a man traveling far, leaving his servants in charge with specific work, commanding the doorkeeper to watch, since no one knows exactly when the master will return. “Watch ye therefore… lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.”
Jesus paired real, specific signs with a firm refusal to name an exact timeline, even declining to state a date Himself. The instruction was never to calculate a countdown, but to remain consistently watchful and faithful, exactly like a servant entrusted with real responsibility while the master is away.
