Jesus sends two disciples to bring a colt that has never been ridden, and as He rides into Jerusalem, many spread their garments and leafy branches on the road, crying, “Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” Jesus enters the temple, looks around at everything, and, since it is already late, withdraws to Bethany with the twelve for the night. The next morning, on the way back, Jesus curses a fig tree that has leaves but no fruit, saying, “No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever.”
Entering the temple, Jesus drives out those buying and selling, overturns the money changers’ tables, and declares, “My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” The chief priests and scribes, hearing this, seek a way to destroy Him, fearing His growing influence with the crowd, since “all the people was astonished at his doctrine.”
The next morning, the disciples notice the fig tree has withered completely from the roots. Jesus uses this as a teaching moment about faith, “have faith in God,” the Greek word for faith here being “pistis,” and promises that whoever believes without doubting can move mountains through prayer, while also emphasizing the need to forgive others so that God may forgive them in return. When chief priests, scribes, and elders challenge Jesus’ authority to do these things, He responds with a question about John’s baptism that leaves them unable to answer without exposing themselves either way.
The fig tree, full of leaves but no actual fruit, becomes a living picture of empty religious appearance without genuine substance, exactly what Jesus had just confronted in the temple. Faith, according to Jesus here, is not measured by outward show, but by real trust in God that produces real, lasting fruit.
