The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Believe” it comes from the Greek Word “pisteuo” which means “to believe, to trust and rely upon.”
A father brings his desperate need to Jesus with one honest, unforgettable sentence. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Mark 9.
Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, and is transfigured before them, His clothing becoming “shining, exceeding white as snow.” Elijah and Moses appear talking with Jesus, and a cloud overshadows them with a voice declaring, “This is my beloved Son: hear him.” Coming down the mountain, Jesus instructs them to tell no one until after the Son of man has risen from the dead, and the disciples question among themselves what rising from the dead could mean.
At the bottom of the mountain, a father brings his son, possessed by a spirit that throws him into convulsions, since the other disciples could not cast it out. The father pleads with Jesus, “If thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.” Jesus responds, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” The father cries out with words that have echoed through the centuries. “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” The Greek word for believe here is “pisteuo,” meaning to trust and rely on. Jesus rebukes the spirit, and the boy is healed.
Jesus again predicts His coming death and resurrection, though the disciples do not understand and are afraid to ask. Arriving in Capernaum, Jesus finds His disciples had been arguing about who among them is greatest, and He teaches that whoever wants to be first must be servant of all, setting a child among them as an example. John reports that they stopped someone casting out devils in Jesus’ name because he was not one of their group, but Jesus responds, “he that is not against us is on our part.”
The father’s honest cry, I believe, help my unbelief, captures something powerful about real faith. It does not require having every doubt resolved first. Jesus responded to that mixture of genuine trust and honest struggle with compassion and healing, exactly as He does for anyone who brings Him the same honest tension today.
