A great multitude, having been with Jesus three days with nothing to eat, moves Jesus to compassion again. With seven loaves and a few small fish, He feeds about four thousand people, with seven baskets of fragments left over. Pharisees soon after demand a sign from heaven to test Him, and Jesus, sighing deeply, refuses, declaring that no sign will be given to this generation. He warns His disciples to beware “the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.” The Greek word for leaven, “zyme,” describes a small corrupting influence capable of spreading through an entire batch of dough, a fitting picture of how subtly wrong teaching or hypocrisy can spread.
At Bethsaida, people bring a blind man to Jesus, who leads him outside the village, spits on his eyes, and lays hands on him. The man’s sight returns gradually, first seeing men “as trees, walking,” before Jesus touches his eyes again and his sight is fully restored, a rare recorded instance of a gradual, two-stage healing.
Traveling toward Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asks His disciples who people say He is, then asks directly, “But whom say ye that I am?” Peter answers, “Thou art the Christ.” Jesus charges them to tell no one, and begins teaching plainly that He must suffer many things, be rejected, killed, and rise again after three days. When Peter rebukes Him for saying this, Jesus responds sharply, “Get thee behind me, Satan.” He then tells the crowd that anyone who wants to follow Him must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow, since “whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.”
Peter’s confession, that Jesus is the Christ, was correct and vital, but he still resisted what following that Christ would actually cost. Recognizing who Jesus is and being ready to embrace the road He walks are two different steps, and Jesus made clear that both matter deeply.
