Arriving in the country of the Gadarenes, Jesus is met by a man possessed by an unclean spirit, living among the tombs, so violently strong that no chain can bind him, crying out and cutting himself with stones night and day. When Jesus commands the spirit to come out, it answers, “My name is Legion: for we are many,” the Greek word “legion” referring to a Roman military unit of roughly six thousand soldiers, a striking picture of just how much torment this one man carried. At the spirits’ request, Jesus permits them to enter a herd of about two thousand pigs, which immediately rush violently down a steep place into the sea and drown.
The local people, more frightened by this power than grateful for the healing, beg Jesus to leave their region. The healed man asks to go with Jesus, but Jesus instead sends him home to tell his friends “how great things the Lord hath done for thee,” and the man goes and publishes it throughout the entire region.
Crossing back over, a ruler named Jairus falls at Jesus’ feet, begging Him to heal his dying daughter. On the way, a woman who has suffered bleeding for twelve years, having spent all she had on physicians without improvement, touches Jesus’ garment in the crowd and is instantly healed. Jesus, feeling power go out of Him, calls her forward, and she confesses everything, trembling. He tells her, “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole.” Word then comes that Jairus’ daughter has died, but Jesus tells him only to believe. Taking Peter, James, and John, Jesus enters the house, takes the girl’s hand, and says, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.” She immediately rises and walks, to everyone’s astonishment.
Two very different people, a man tormented by thousands of demons and a woman quietly suffering for twelve years, both experience complete restoration through direct contact with Jesus. No condition is too extreme and no suffering too private for His attention and power to reach.
