The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Immediately” it comes from the Greek Word “eutheos” which means “immediately, at once.”
Mark wastes no time. In just a few verses, John baptizes, heaven opens, and Jesus is already at work. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Mark 1.
Mark opens abruptly, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,” and moves immediately to John the Baptist preaching repentance in the wilderness. John baptizes Jesus in the Jordan, and as Jesus comes up out of the water, the heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and a voice declares, “Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The Spirit immediately drives Jesus into the wilderness, where He is tempted by Satan for forty days among the wild beasts.
Mark’s Gospel moves at a rapid pace, marked by his favorite word, “eutheos,” Greek for “immediately,” used repeatedly to convey urgency. Immediately after John is imprisoned, Jesus begins preaching in Galilee. Immediately He calls Simon, Andrew, James, and John, who leave their nets to follow Him. Immediately He teaches in the synagogue at Capernaum “with authority, and not as the scribes,” and immediately casts an unclean spirit out of a man there, astonishing everyone.
Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law of a fever, and that evening heals many who are sick and possessed throughout the town. Rising early the next morning to pray alone, Jesus tells His disciples they must move on to preach in other towns too, “for therefore came I forth.” He travels throughout Galilee preaching and casting out devils, and cleanses a leper who then spreads the news so widely that Jesus can no longer enter a city openly.
Mark’s fast pace throughout this chapter reflects his whole Gospel’s tone, Jesus in constant, urgent motion, meeting need after need without delay. Even with crowds pressing from every direction, Jesus still makes time alone to pray before sunrise, a rhythm worth noticing in the middle of all that motion.
