The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Talents” it comes from the Greek Word “talanton” which means “a talent, a large unit of money or weight.”

Jesus continues His teaching on the Mount of Olives with the parable of ten virgins waiting for a bridegroom, five wise, who bring enough oil for their lamps, and five foolish, who do not. When the bridegroom is delayed and finally arrives at midnight, the foolish virgins have run out of oil and are left locked out entirely. Jesus closes the parable with a warning to watch, “for ye know neither the day nor the hour.”
He follows with the parable of the talents, a master entrusting his servants with different amounts of money before going on a journey, one receiving five talents, one two, and one just a single talent. The Greek word “talanton” originally referred to a large unit of weight or money. The servants given five and two talents both invest wisely and double what they were given, but the servant with one talent, out of fear, simply buries it in the ground. When the master returns, he praises and rewards the first two, but harshly condemns the third for his fear-driven inaction, calling him “wicked and slothful.”
Jesus then describes the final judgment, the Son of man separating “the sheep from the goats” as a shepherd separates his flock. The sheep, placed at His right hand, are welcomed into the kingdom because they fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, welcomed strangers, clothed the naked, and visited the sick and imprisoned. Jesus tells them plainly, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” The goats, who neglected these same acts of mercy, receive the opposite judgment.
All three parables in this chapter point to the same warning, that readiness cannot be borrowed or postponed at the last moment. The wise virgins could not share their oil. The buried talent produced nothing. And genuine faith, according to the sheep and goats, always shows itself through real, practical mercy toward the people right in front of us.
