John the Baptist, imprisoned, hears reports of what Jesus is doing and sends his own disciples to ask directly, “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” Jesus answers by pointing to the evidence itself, the blind receiving sight, the lame walking, lepers cleansed, the dead raised, and the poor having the gospel preached to them, echoing prophecies from Isaiah. Jesus then praises John publicly as the greatest prophet born of women, while also noting that even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is.
Jesus rebukes the cities where He performed most of His miracles, Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum, for their unbelief, warning that even wicked Sodom would have repented if it had seen what they saw. Yet immediately after this harsh warning, Jesus offers one of the gentlest invitations in the entire Bible. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” The Greek word for rest here is “anapauo,” describing genuine refreshment and relief.
He describes His yoke as “easy” and His burden as “light,” inviting anyone weary to learn from Him, since He is “meek and lowly in heart.” This chapter shows the full range of Jesus’ ministry, patiently answering honest doubt, firmly confronting unrepentant unbelief, and warmly welcoming anyone exhausted enough to come to Him for rest.
Even John the Baptist, who had baptized Jesus and heard the voice from heaven, wrestled with doubt in prison. Jesus did not shame him for asking. He simply pointed to the evidence and kept inviting the weary to come find rest in Him, no matter how tired or uncertain they felt.
