Jesus continues His sermon by warning against practicing righteousness “to be seen of men.” He addresses giving, praying, and fasting the same way each time, warning against the hypocrites who make a public show of their devotion, and instructing His followers to do these things quietly, trusting that “thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.”
He then teaches His disciples how to pray, giving them what we now call the Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name… Give us this day our daily bread… And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” The Greek word translated “daily” here, “epiousios,” is a rare word suggesting bread that is necessary and sufficient for each day, no more and no less.
Jesus then shifts to the subject of priorities, warning against laying up treasures on earth, “where moth and rust doth corrupt,” and urging His followers to store up treasure in heaven instead, since “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” He addresses anxiety directly, pointing to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, neither of which labor or worry, yet are cared for by God. “Take therefore no thought for the morrow… Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Jesus repeatedly redirects attention away from outward appearance and toward the heart’s true motives and priorities. Prayer, giving, and worry all trace back to the same question, where our trust actually lives. Seeking God’s kingdom first is not one priority among many. It is meant to reorder everything else.
