The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Follow” it comes from the Greek Word “akoloutheo” which means “to follow, to accompany as a disciple.”
Before His ministry begins, Jesus faces the enemy alone in the desert. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Matthew 4.
The Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness specifically to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and nights, Jesus is hungry, and the devil begins with a challenge to His identity. “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” Jesus answers with Scripture, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Each of the three temptations targets a different weakness, physical hunger, testing God’s protection, and the offer of worldly power, and each time Jesus responds by quoting Deuteronomy rather than relying on His own strength.
After the devil departs, angels come and minister to Jesus. Hearing that John the Baptist has been imprisoned, Jesus withdraws to Galilee and begins to preach the same core message John proclaimed. “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He calls His first disciples, the brothers Simon Peter and Andrew, and then James and John, all of them fishermen. Each pair leaves their nets immediately to follow him, the Greek word for this call being “akoloutheo,” meaning to accompany as a committed disciple.
Jesus travels throughout Galilee teaching in synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of sickness and disease among the people. His fame spreads quickly, and great crowds begin following him from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judaea, and even beyond the Jordan.
Jesus faced real temptation and overcame it not through supernatural shortcuts but by standing firmly on God’s word. That same weapon is available to anyone facing temptation today. And the disciples’ immediate willingness to leave everything behind shows exactly what it costs, and what it means, to genuinely follow him.
