John the Baptist appears in the wilderness of Judaea, dressed in camel’s hair with a leather belt, eating locusts and wild honey. His message is direct and urgent. “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” The Greek word for repent is “metanoeo,” meaning to change one’s mind and turn in a completely new direction. Crowds come from Jerusalem and all Judaea to be baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
When Pharisees and Sadducees come to be baptized, John confronts them sharply, calling them a “generation of vipers” and warning them not to rely on their heritage as children of Abraham, since God can raise up children from stones if He wants to. He insists that genuine repentance must produce real change, “fruits meet for repentance.”
John also points beyond himself, declaring that one is coming after him who is mightier, whose shoes he is not worthy to carry, who will baptize “with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.” When Jesus Himself comes to be baptized, John hesitates, recognizing Jesus does not need it. Jesus insists, “it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.” As Jesus comes up out of the water, the heavens open, the Spirit of God descends like a dove, and a voice from heaven declares, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
John’s ministry was never about drawing attention to himself. Every message pointed forward to someone greater. And at Jesus’ baptism, all three persons of God appear together for the first time in Scripture, the Father speaking, the Spirit descending, and the Son standing in the water, launching His public ministry.
