Wise men from the east arrive in Jerusalem, following a star and asking, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” The Greek word for worship here is “proskyneo,” meaning to bow down in reverence. King Herod, threatened by the news, secretly asks the wise men to report back once they find the child, under the pretense of wanting to worship him too.
The star leads the wise men to Bethlehem, where they find Jesus with Mary, and they worship him, presenting gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they go home a different way. An angel then warns Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt, since Herod intends to kill the child.
Enraged at being outwitted, Herod orders the murder of every male child two years old and under in Bethlehem, fulfilling a sorrowful prophecy from Jeremiah about weeping in Ramah. After Herod’s death, an angel tells Joseph it is safe to return, and the family settles in Nazareth, fulfilling yet another prophecy, that Jesus would be called a Nazarene.
The wise men traveled a great distance simply to worship, while Herod, sitting on an actual throne, saw the same news only as a threat. The same truth about Jesus can either draw a heart toward worship or provoke fear and hostility. It depends entirely on what that heart is already protecting.
