Matthew opens by tracing the genealogy of Jesus Christ, “the son of David, the son of Abraham,” through forty-two generations. The list is not just names. It includes Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba, women with complicated, sometimes scandalous stories, showing that God’s plan always included the unlikely and the overlooked.
The story then turns to Joseph, engaged to Mary, who discovers she is pregnant before they have come together. Joseph, described as “a just man,” plans to quietly end the engagement rather than expose her publicly. But an angel appears to him in a dream, explaining that the child is conceived “of the Holy Ghost,” and instructing him to name the baby Jesus, “for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Matthew connects this directly to an ancient prophecy from Isaiah, that a virgin would conceive and bear a son who would be called “Emmanuel,” meaning “God with us.” The Greek form of that name is “Emmanouel.” Joseph obeys immediately, taking Mary as his wife, and names the child Jesus when he is born.
Even the genealogy of Jesus tells a story of grace, filled with flawed people God still used for His purposes. And the name Emmanuel says everything about why Jesus came. God did not stay distant from a broken world. He stepped directly into it. Matthew’s very first chapter sets the tone for the whole Gospel, a Savior born into an ordinary, imperfect family line, sent for ordinary, imperfect people.
