Leaders from the tribe of Manasseh approach Moses with a follow-up concern regarding the earlier ruling given to Zelophehad’s daughters back in chapter twenty-seven. If these women marry men from another tribe, their inherited land would transfer to their husband’s tribe, permanently reducing Manasseh’s allotted territory and disrupting the careful tribal boundaries God had just established.
Moses brings this concern before the Lord, and God confirms that the tribe of Manasseh “speaketh right,” ruling that any woman who inherits property in this situation must marry within her own tribe’s family, so that each tribe’s inheritance, “nachalah” in Hebrew, remains intact and does not pass from one tribe to another, ensuring that “every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.”
Zelophehad’s daughters comply willingly, marrying their father’s brothers’ sons, keeping their inheritance secured within the tribe of Manasseh exactly as instructed. The book of Numbers closes noting these are the commandments and judgments the Lord commanded through Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan near Jericho, poised finally, after this entire long, difficult wilderness journey, right on the very edge of the promised land itself.

Yet that detail fits the whole book’s pattern, God’s concern reaching into the smallest practical details of His people’s lives, ensuring nothing, not even a specific family’s land, was left carelessly unresolved before they finally entered the land He had promised.
