God tells Moses to avenge the children of Israel against the Midianites, since they had used Balaam’s counsel to deliberately lure Israel into idolatry at Baalpeor. Moses sends a thousand men from each tribe, twelve thousand total, along with Phinehas carrying holy instruments and trumpets, and Israel defeats Midian decisively, killing five Midianite kings and Balaam himself in the process, “nakam” in Hebrew describing this act of vengeance or retribution carried out on God’s behalf.
The army returns with captives, livestock, and goods, but Moses is angry that they spared the Midianite women, since it was specifically these women, following Balaam’s counsel, who had caused Israel to sin against the Lord at Peor, resulting in the devastating plague. Moses commands that they be dealt with accordingly, while young girls who had not participated in that sin are permitted to live.
Detailed instructions follow for purifying both the soldiers and the plunder itself, since contact with the dead and with foreign, potentially defiled items required careful cleansing before returning fully into the camp. The spoil is then divided carefully between the soldiers who fought and the rest of the congregation, with specific portions set aside as a heave offering for the Lord, given to Eleazar the priest and the Levites, a formal, structured conclusion to this difficult but decisive military campaign against the very nation that had caused Israel such serious spiritual harm.
This difficult chapter reflects just how seriously God treated the deliberate spiritual harm Midian had caused Israel, harm that resulted in real, devastating consequences at Baalpeor. Some threats to a community’s faithfulness, this account suggests, required decisive action, not because judgment is ever easy, but because compromise had already proven so costly.
