The five daughters of Zelophehad, a man who died in the wilderness leaving no sons, approach Moses, Eleazar, and the leaders of the congregation with an unprecedented request. Since their father died for his own sin rather than as part of Korah’s specific rebellion, and left no son to inherit his portion of the land, they ask, “Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.”
Moses brings their case directly before the Lord, and God responds, “The daughters of Zelophehad speak right,” instructing that they receive their father’s inheritance, and establishing a new statute of judgment, “mishpat” in Hebrew, that if a man dies without a son, his inheritance passes to his daughter, and if he has no daughter either, it passes to his brothers, and so on through the family line, ensuring that no family’s inheritance would simply vanish for lack of a male heir.
God then tells Moses to go up a mountain and view the promised land he will not personally enter, reminding him again of his failure at the water of Meribah. Rather than despairing over his own exclusion, Moses immediately asks God to appoint a new leader for the congregation, “that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.” God instructs Moses to commission Joshua publicly, laying his hand on him before Eleazar and the whole congregation, transferring his authority visibly to the man who would finally lead Israel into the land.
Zelophehad’s daughters could have simply accepted an unjust system silently, but they brought their case directly and respectfully to Moses, and God responded by changing the law itself in their favor. Bringing honest, thoughtful requests before God, this story shows, is never treated as inappropriate, even when it challenges existing assumptions.
