After nearly forty years and an entire generation’s passing, God orders a new count of the people. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Numbers 26.
Following the plague at Baalpeor, God commands Moses and Eleazar to take a new census of all Israel’s fighting men, tribe by tribe, in preparation for finally entering and dividing the promised land. This second count proceeds through each tribe much as the first census in chapter one did, though this time recording an entirely new generation, since the men originally counted at Sinai have almost entirely died in the wilderness as God had warned.
The text specifically notes that among all those first numbered, “there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun,” a sobering confirmation that God’s judgment following the spies’ unbelief had been carried out exactly as declared, generation after generation replaced almost completely over these forty years of wilderness wandering.
God instructs that the promised land be divided among these tribes “according to the number of names,” larger tribes receiving proportionally more land, determined by casting lots. A separate, smaller census counts the Levites specifically, again excluded from the general count of fighting men, and again noting that Nadab and Abihu died for offering strange fire, a reminder still echoing decades later. The total count of fighting men reaches 601,730, remarkably close to the original number decades earlier, showing that despite everything lost in the wilderness, God had still preserved and grown this new generation into a nation ready to finally take possession of the land.
This second census stands as quiet proof that God’s judgment on the unbelieving generation was thorough, yet His promise to Abraham’s descendants remained completely intact. An entirely new generation stood ready to inherit what their parents had forfeited through fear, showing that God’s plans outlast even a generation’s complete failure.
