NUMBERS 18 ‐ “The Duties and Portion of the Priests”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Iniquity” it comes from the Hebrew Word “avon” which means “iniquity, guilt, responsibility for sin.”

God clarifies exactly what responsibility, and what provision, belongs to the priests and Levites. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Numbers 18.

God tells Aaron directly that he and his sons, along with the Levites, will bear the responsibility, “avon” in Hebrew, for any iniquity connected to the sanctuary and the priesthood, protecting the rest of Israel from the wrath that would otherwise fall on anyone approaching carelessly. The Levites are given to Aaron as a gift from among the children of Israel to serve the tabernacle, while the priesthood itself remains exclusively for Aaron and his descendants, since “the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.”

God explains that the priests’ provision comes directly from Israel’s offerings, portions of the most holy things, the heave offerings, and the firstfruits of oil, wine, and grain, along with everything devoted to the Lord and the firstborn of clean animals. The Levites, in turn, receive the tithe, a tenth of Israel’s produce, as their inheritance in exchange for the service they perform at the tabernacle, “because they have no inheritance among the children of Israel.”

God then instructs the Levites themselves to offer a tenth of the tithe they receive back to the Lord, given to the priests as “the best of it,” treated exactly like the offerings from the threshingfloor and winepress. This layered system ensured that both priests and Levites were fully supported for their sacred service, while the rest of Israel’s land and inheritance remained available for their own families, since the Levites’ true inheritance was the Lord Himself.

The Levites’ inheritance was deliberately different from every other tribe, no land of their own, only the Lord Himself and the tithe of His people. That arrangement made their livelihood directly dependent on Israel’s ongoing faithfulness in giving, tying the priesthood’s wellbeing to the whole nation’s continued devotion to God.
