The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Rebel” it comes from the Hebrew Word “marah” which means “to rebel, to be contentious.”

The whole congregation weeps through the night, wishing they had died in Egypt or in the wilderness rather than face the giants in Canaan, even proposing to choose a new leader and return to Egypt. Joshua and Caleb tear their clothes and plead with the people, insisting the land is exceedingly good and that the Lord will surely bring them in if He delights in them, urging them not to rebel or fear, “for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us.” The congregation nearly stones them instead of listening.
God’s glory appears at the tabernacle, and He tells Moses He is ready to disinherit this people entirely and start over through Moses. Moses intercedes passionately, appealing to God’s reputation among the nations and to His own revealed character, “The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression.” God pardons the nation as Moses requests, but declares that none of this generation who saw His glory and His miracles yet tested Him these ten times will enter the promised land, except Caleb and Joshua, “because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully.” Everyone twenty years and older will die in the wilderness over the next forty years, one year for each day the spies explored the land.
When Moses reports this judgment, the people mourn greatly and attempt to enter the land anyway the next morning without God’s presence or Moses’ blessing, despite being warned not to. The Amalekites and Canaanites defeat them decisively, driving them back, a painful, immediate confirmation of exactly what God had just warned would happen without His presence going before them.
The tragedy of this chapter wasn’t the presence of giants in the land. It was Israel’s refusal to trust the God who had already parted a sea and fed them daily from heaven. Unbelief cost an entire generation the very promise they had been journeying toward, while Caleb’s different spirit, wholehearted trust, carried him through to see it fulfilled.
