One year after leaving Egypt, God commands Israel to keep the Passover at its appointed time. Some men, however, are ceremonially unclean due to contact with a dead body and cannot participate, so they bring their concern to Moses, asking why they should be kept from offering an offering to the Lord “in his appointed season.” God provides a gracious solution, a “second Passover,” “pesach sheni” in Hebrew, exactly one month later, for anyone unclean or on a distant journey during the original date, ensuring that circumstances beyond someone’s control would not permanently exclude them from this significant observance.
God warns, however, that anyone who is clean and not traveling, yet still neglects to keep the Passover, will be cut off from the people, since that person bears their own sin for the neglect. God adds that this same provision extends equally to any stranger living among Israel who wishes to keep the Passover according to its statutes and ordinances.
The chapter closes describing how a cloud covers the tabernacle by day, appearing like fire by night, and Israel’s entire journey depends entirely on its movement. Whenever the cloud lifts, Israel journeys onward; whenever it remains, they stay in place, whether for two days, a month, or a full year. “At the commandment of the LORD they rested in the tents, and at the commandment of the LORD they journeyed,” a rhythm of complete, consistent dependence on God’s visible guidance throughout their entire wilderness journey.
God’s provision of a second Passover for those legitimately unable to keep the first shows real compassion built into His requirements, distinguishing genuine circumstances from careless neglect. And Israel’s total dependence on the cloud’s movement, sometimes staying put for a whole year without complaint, models a patient, moment-by-moment trust in God’s timing.
