God commands a census specifically of Kohathite men between thirty and fifty years old, the age range for active tabernacle service, “the work of the service,” “abodah” in Hebrew, meaning labor or service. Before the Kohathites may even approach the most holy objects, Aaron and his sons must first cover the ark, table, lampstand, and altars carefully with layers of cloth and skins, so that the Kohathites never see or touch these holy things directly, “lest they die.”
Detailed instructions follow specifying exactly how each piece is to be wrapped and prepared before the Kohathites carry it on their shoulders using staves. Similar counts and assignments follow for the Gershonites, responsible for the tabernacle’s coverings and hangings, and the Merarites, responsible for its structural framework, boards, bars, pillars, and sockets, each group working under the direct oversight of Ithamar, Aaron’s son.
The total count of all Levite men eligible for this service, from all three family divisions combined, comes to 8,580, each assigned specific, carefully defined responsibilities. The chapter closes noting that this entire arrangement was carried out exactly according to the Lord’s commandment through Moses, ensuring that Israel’s most sacred objects were always handled with the reverence and precision God required.
The elaborate care taken to shield even faithful Levites from directly viewing the ark reflects just how seriously God’s holiness was treated throughout this entire book. Even sincere service required careful boundaries. Proximity to sacred responsibility never meant casual familiarity with what remained genuinely holy.
