Malachi describes the day coming that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud, yes, and all who do wickedly, shall be “stubble,” “qash” in Hebrew, and the day that comes shall burn them up, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch, but to those who fear His name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings, and they shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
Malachi promises they shall tread down the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of their feet in the day that He shall do this, says the Lord of hosts, urging them to remember the law of Moses His servant, which He commanded to him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments, this call back to the law of Moses closing the entire Old Testament canon with a reminder of the covenant foundation upon which all subsequent revelation would build.
Malachi delivers the Old Testament’s magnificent closing promise, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse,” a promise the Gospels connect to John the Baptist’s ministry in the spirit and power of Elijah, this closing verse leaving the Old Testament on a note of genuine expectation, urgently awaiting the coming of both a forerunner and the Lord Himself, a note of hope that would remain unanswered in Scripture for some four hundred years until the opening pages of the New Testament finally resumed this magnificent, unfolding story.
Malachi’s closing image, the Sun of righteousness arising with healing in His wings, offers one of the Old Testament’s most beautiful pictures of restoration for those who genuinely fear God’s name amid a world facing appointed judgment. This book’s final promise of Elijah’s return, directly connected by the Gospels to John the Baptist’s ministry, leaves the entire Old Testament canon closing on a note of genuine, unresolved expectation, awaiting the New Testament’s dramatic fulfillment centuries later.
