Malachi delivers a magnificent promise, “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts,” a prophecy the Gospels directly apply to John the Baptist, asking who may abide the day of his coming, for He is like a “refiner’s fire,” “esh tsaraph” in Hebrew, and like fullers’ soap.
Malachi describes Him sitting as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness, then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem being pleasant to the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years, promising He will come near to them in judgment, and will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not Him.
Malachi delivers one of Scripture’s most quoted challenges, the Lord declaring, “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings,” urging them to bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in His house, and to prove Him now, whether He will not open the windows of heaven, and pour them out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it, promising He will rebuke the devourer for their sakes, and He will not destroy the fruits of their ground, closing with a promise that all nations shall call them blessed, for they shall be a delightsome land, this remarkable challenge inviting genuine, tangible testing of God’s faithfulness through obedient generosity.
Malachi’s promise of a coming messenger who would prepare the way, directly applied by all four Gospels to John the Baptist, demonstrates this book’s continuing, precise relevance to events centuries beyond its own immediate historical moment. His memorable challenge, prove Me now, and see if I will not pour out a blessing, offers a rare invitation for genuine, tangible testing of God’s faithfulness through the specific, concrete obedience of faithful tithing.
