The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Captivity” it comes from the Hebrew Word “shevi” which means “captivity.”
Zechariah closes with a vision of the Lord’s final victory and universal reign over all the earth. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Zechariah 14.
Zechariah describes the day of the Lord coming, when the spoil shall be divided in the midst of Jerusalem, for He will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished, and half of the city going forth into “captivity,” “shevi” in Hebrew, and the residue of the people not being cut off from the city.
Zechariah describes the Lord going forth, and fighting against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle, His feet standing in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives cleaving in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there being a very great valley, and the Lord His God coming, and all the saints with Him, describing living waters going out from Jerusalem, half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea, in summer and in winter shall it be.
Zechariah declares the Lord shall be King over all the earth, in that day there shall be one Lord, and His name one, all the land being turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem, Jerusalem being lifted up, and inhabited in her place, warning of a plague the Lord will smite all the people with who have fought against Jerusalem, their flesh consuming away while they stand upon their feet, closing with a magnificent, universal vision that every survivor of all the nations shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles, this closing chapter bringing the entire book, and the entire Old Testament prophetic tradition, to a fitting climax in the Lord’s universal, unchallenged reign.
Zechariah’s magnificent closing vision, the Lord standing upon the Mount of Olives and becoming King over all the earth, brings this remarkably rich prophetic book to a fitting climax uniting judgment, deliverance, and universal worship into one coherent picture. This final promise that even the nations will ultimately worship the Lord of hosts at Jerusalem offers a fitting capstone to Zechariah’s persistent theme, that God’s covenant purposes extend genuinely beyond Israel alone toward the entire world.
