The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Truth” it comes from the Hebrew Word “emet” which means “truth.”
Zechariah promises Jerusalem’s restoration will bring both aged rest and joyful, playing children. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Zechariah 8.
Zechariah receives the word of the Lord of hosts, declaring, “I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury,” promising He is returned to Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem shall be called a city of “truth,” “emet” in Hebrew, and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain. Zechariah records the Lord’s promise that old men and old women shall again dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, every man with his staff in his hand for very age, and the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets, asking whether it should be marvelous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, whether it should also be marvelous in His eyes, promising He will save His people from the east country, and from the west country, and will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem, and they shall be His people, and He will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. Zechariah urges them to let their hands be strong, since these are the days in which the temple’s foundation was laid, for before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast, but now He will not be to the residue of this people as in the former days, for the seed shall be prosperous, the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, urging them to speak every man the truth to his neighbor, execute the judgment of truth and peace in their gates, and let none imagine evil in their hearts against his neighbor, closing with a beautiful promise that many people and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem, ten men taking hold of the skirt of him who is a Jew, saying, “We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.”
Zechariah’s tender image, old men and old women resting on their staffs while children play freely in Jerusalem’s streets, offers a beautifully human, everyday picture of genuine peace and security following the trauma of exile and rebuilding. His closing vision, ten men from every nation grasping a Jew’s garment saying we have heard God is with you, anticipates the ultimate ingathering of the nations toward the Lord through His covenant people.
