The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Chariots” it comes from the Hebrew Word “merkavah” which means “chariot.”
Zechariah sees four chariots go forth, then crowns Joshua as a picture of the coming Branch. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Zechariah 6.
Zechariah turns and lifts up his eyes, and looks, and behold four “chariots,” “merkavah” in Hebrew, coming out from between two mountains, and the mountains being mountains of brass, the first chariot having red horses, the second chariot black horses, the third chariot white horses, and the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses.
Zechariah asks the angel what these are, being told these are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth, the black horses going forth into the north country, the white going forth after them, and the grisled going forth toward the south country, these being sent to walk to and fro through the earth, and they walking to and fro through the earth, then being told to get out of the north country, having quieted His spirit in the north country.
Zechariah receives the word of the Lord, telling him to take of them of the captivity, from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, and to make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, declaring, “Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne,” this remarkable act of crowning the priest picturing the coming Messiah who would unite the offices of king and priest.
Zechariah’s dramatic act of crowning Joshua the high priest, though Joshua was not from the royal line, delivers a powerful acted prophecy pointing toward the coming Branch who would uniquely combine both kingly and priestly offices in one person. This chapter’s declaration that this coming Branch shall build the temple of the Lord and sit as priest upon his throne finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ, who alone unites these two offices Israel’s law had always kept carefully separate.
