Zechariah sees a flying scroll of judgment and a woman of wickedness carried away in an ephah. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Zechariah 5.
Zechariah turns and lifts up his eyes, and looks, and behold a flying “roll,” “megillah” in Hebrew, being asked what he sees, answering he sees a flying roll, the length of it being twenty cubits, and the breadth of it ten cubits, being told this is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth, for everyone who steals shall be cut off, and everyone who swears shall be cut off.
Zechariah records the Lord bringing this curse forth, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him who swears falsely by His name, and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber and the stones, then the angel that talked with him going forth, and saying to him to lift up his eyes, and see what is this that goes forth, asking what it is, being told this is an ephah that goes forth, this being their resemblance through all the earth.
Zechariah sees a talent of lead lifted up, and a woman sitting in the midst of the ephah, being told this is wickedness, and the angel casting it into the midst of the ephah, and casting the weight of lead upon the mouth of it, then lifting up his eyes, and seeing two women coming out, with the wind in their wings, having wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifting up the ephah between the earth and the heaven, asking where they carry the ephah, being told to build it a house in the land of Shinar, and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base, this striking vision depicting sin’s complete, decisive removal from the restored covenant community.
Zechariah’s vision of the flying scroll pronouncing curse against thieves and false swearers demonstrates that genuine covenant restoration required decisive dealing with ongoing moral and religious sin among the people, not merely rebuilding physical structures. His striking image, wickedness personified as a woman sealed inside an ephah and carried away to a distant land, conveys sin’s complete, decisive removal from the restored community rather than mere temporary suppression.
