The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Lamps” it comes from the Hebrew Word “ner” which means “lamp.”
Zechariah sees a golden lampstand and two olive trees, receiving God’s promise of Spirit-empowered completion. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Zechariah 4.
Zechariah is wakened by the angel, as a man who is wakened out of his sleep, asked what he sees, answering he has looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven “lamps,” “ner” in Hebrew, on it, and two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side of it.
Zechariah asks the angel what these things are, being told this is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel, saying, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts,” asking who he is, O great mountain, before Zerubbabel he shall become a plain, and he shall bring forth the headstone with shoutings, crying, “Grace, grace unto it,” Zerubbabel’s hands having laid the foundation of this house, his hands also finishing it.
Zechariah asks concerning the two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side of it, and concerning the two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves, being asked whether he knows what these are, answering no, my lord, being told these are the two anointed ones, who stand by the Lord of the whole earth, this remarkable vision affirming that Zerubbabel’s work rebuilding the temple would ultimately succeed not through human strength but through the Lord’s own empowering Spirit.
Zechariah’s memorable declaration, not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, remains one of Scripture’s most quoted verses, reminding every generation that lasting spiritual accomplishment ultimately depends on God’s own empowering presence rather than merely human strength or resource. This chapter’s vision of the two anointed ones standing by the Lord, traditionally understood as Zerubbabel and Joshua, demonstrates that restored civil and religious leadership together served God’s unified covenant purpose.
