The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Brand” it comes from the Hebrew Word “ud” which means “firebrand.”

Zechariah sees Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him, the Lord rebuking Satan, even the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuking him, asking whether this is not a “brand,” “ud” in Hebrew, plucked out of the fire, Joshua being clothed with filthy garments, and standing before the angel.
Zechariah records the angel answering and speaking to those who stood before him, telling them to take away the filthy garments from him, and saying to Joshua, “Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment,” commanding a fair miter to be set upon his head, so they set a fair miter upon his head, and clothed him with garments, the angel of the Lord standing by.
Zechariah records the Lord’s charge to Joshua, that if he will walk in His ways, and keep His charge, he shall also judge His house, and shall also keep His courts, and He will give him places to walk among those who stand by, urging him to hear, O Joshua the high priest, he and his fellows who sit before him, for they are men wondered at, for behold, He will bring forth His servant the Branch, promising that upon one stone shall be seven eyes, and He will engrave the graving of it, and will remove the iniquity of that land in one day, closing with a beautiful promise that in that day every man shall call his neighbor under the vine and under the fig tree, this image of cleansed priesthood pointing forward to the ultimate removal of sin through the coming Branch.
Zechariah’s vivid courtroom vision, Joshua standing accused in filthy garments while Satan resists him, only to be cleansed and reclothed by the Lord’s own command, offers a striking picture of grace overriding legitimate accusation through God’s sovereign initiative alone. This chapter’s messianic reference to the coming Branch who will remove iniquity in one day points forward toward ultimate, complete atonement beyond what the restored priesthood alone could accomplish.
