The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Repentance” it comes from the Hebrew Word “shuvah” which means “return, repentance.”
Zechariah calls Israel to return to the Lord, then receives a vision of horsemen patrolling the earth. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Zechariah 1.
Zechariah, son of Berechiah, receives the word of the Lord in the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, urging the people, “Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts,” warning them not to be as their fathers, to whom the former prophets cried, urging “repentance,” “shuvah” in Hebrew, yet they did not hear, nor hearken to Him.
Zechariah describes a night vision, seeing a man riding upon a red horse, standing among the myrtle trees in the bottom, and behind him red horses, speckled, and white, asking the angel who talked with him what these are, being told these are those the Lord has sent to walk to and fro through the earth, they answering the angel of the Lord that stood among the myrtle trees, that they have walked to and fro through the earth, and behold, all the earth sits still, and is at rest.
Zechariah records the angel’s cry, asking how long the Lord will not have mercy on Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, against which He has had indignation these threescore and ten years, the Lord answering with good words and comfortable words, promising He is returned to Jerusalem with mercies, His house shall be built in it, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem, then seeing four horns, and four carpenters, being told the horns are those which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem, but the carpenters are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the nations who lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.
Zechariah’s opening call, turn to Me and I will turn to you, establishes this book’s foundational premise that genuine restoration always begins with sincere repentance rather than mere passive waiting for circumstances to improve. His vision of patrolling horsemen finding all the earth at rest, followed by the Lord’s promise of comfort for Jerusalem, demonstrates that God’s watchful attention over world affairs directly serves His ongoing covenant purposes for His people.
