The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Ceiled” it comes from the Hebrew Word “caphan” which means “paneled, covered.”

Haggai the prophet speaks in the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, the word of the Lord coming by him to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the high priest, declaring, “This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built,” the Lord asking whether it is time for them to dwell in their “ceiled,” “caphan” in Hebrew, houses while His house lies waste.
Haggai urges them to consider their ways, since they have sown much, and bring in little, they eat, but they have not enough, they drink, but they are not filled with drink, they clothe themselves, but there is none warm, and he who earns wages earns wages to put it into a bag with holes, urging them to go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house, that He may take pleasure in it, and He may be glorified.
Haggai declares that because His house lies waste, and they run every man to his own house, therefore the heaven over them is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit, and He has called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon what the ground brings forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands, closing with the remarkable response, Zerubbabel, Joshua, and all the remnant of the people obeying the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, and the people fearing before the Lord, this swift, genuine obedience standing in refreshing contrast to Israel’s frequent historic resistance to prophetic correction.
Haggai’s pointed challenge, consider your ways, exposes how the returned exiles had grown comfortable prioritizing their own paneled houses while God’s own house remained in ruins, a subtle but genuine misplacement of priority. This chapter’s remarkable, swift response, the leaders and people immediately obeying rather than resisting correction, offers an encouraging model of genuine repentance responding promptly once misplaced priorities are clearly identified.
