The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Meek” it comes from the Hebrew Word “anav” which means “meek, humble.”

Zephaniah urges the nation not desired to gather itself together, before the decree brings forth, before the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord comes upon them, urging all the “meek,” “anav” in Hebrew, of the earth to seek the Lord, who have wrought His judgment, to seek righteousness, to seek meekness, that they may be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.
Zephaniah pronounces woe against the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites, the word of the Lord being against Canaan, the land of the Philistines, declaring He will destroy it, that there shall be no inhabitant, warning also against Moab and Ammon, who have reproached His people, and magnified themselves against their border, declaring Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, the residue of His people shall spoil them, and the remnant of His people shall possess them.
Zephaniah declares this shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the Lord of hosts, the Lord being terrible to them, for He will famish all the gods of the earth, and men shall worship Him from his place, even all the isles of the heathen, warning the Ethiopians too shall be slain by His sword, and He will stretch out His hand also against the north, and destroy Assyria, and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness, closing with a description of flocks lying down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations, both the cormorant and the bittern lodging in the upper lintels of it, their voice singing in the windows, desolation being in the thresholds, this how-the-mighty-have-fallen picture of once-great Nineveh reduced to a haunt for wild creatures.
Zephaniah’s urgent call, seek the Lord, all the meek of the earth, seek righteousness, seek meekness, offers genuine hope of shelter even amid sweeping judgment for those who genuinely, humbly turn toward God before it is too late. His extensive catalog of judgment against surrounding nations, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Ethiopia, and Assyria, demonstrates that God’s justice genuinely extends universally rather than applying only to His own covenant people.
