Habakkuk prays this prayer set to Shigionoth, declaring, “O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy,” describing God coming from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran, His “glory,” “hod” in Hebrew, covering the heavens, and the earth being full of His praise.
Habakkuk describes His brightness being as the light, He having horns coming out of His hand, and there being the hiding of His power, before Him going the pestilence, and burning coals going forth at His feet, He standing, and measuring the earth, He beholding, and driving asunder the nations, the everlasting mountains being scattered, the perpetual hills bowing, His ways being everlasting, describing the mountains seeing Him, and trembling, the overflowing of the water passing by, the deep uttering his voice, and lifting up his hands on high.
Habakkuk closes with one of Scripture’s most magnificent expressions of faith, declaring, “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation,” describing the Lord God as his strength, who will make his feet like hinds’ feet, and will make him to walk upon his high places, this closing declaration transforming the entire book’s anguished questioning into settled, unshakable joy rooted not in circumstance but in God Himself.
