Micah pronounces woe to those who devise “iniquity,” “aven” in Hebrew, and work evil upon their beds, when the morning is light they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand, coveting fields, and taking them by violence, and houses, and taking them away, oppressing a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.
Micah declares the Lord’s response, that against this family He devises an evil, from which they shall not remove their necks, neither shall they go haughtily, for this time is evil, warning that in that day one shall take up a parable against them, and lament with a doleful lamentation, saying they are utterly spoiled, He has changed the portion of His people, rebuking false prophets who tell the people not to prophesy, insisting they shall not prophesy, that they shall not take shame.
Micah asks whether the house of Jacob is thus said, is the Spirit of the Lord straitened, are these His doings, do not His words do good to him that walks uprightly, rebuking those who rise up as an enemy, pulling off the robe with the garment from those who pass by securely, casting the women of His people out from their pleasant houses, from their children taking away His glory forever, closing with a beautiful promise that He will surely gather the remnant of Israel, putting them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold, they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men, the breaker coming up before them, their king passing before them, and the Lord on the head of them.
Micah’s pointed condemnation of the wealthy who covet fields and seize houses by violence exposes how systematic economic oppression against the vulnerable constitutes genuine, serious sin deserving prophetic rebuke rather than mere unfortunate social circumstance. His confrontation with false prophets who silence uncomfortable truth reveals that genuine prophetic ministry frequently faces real opposition precisely from those most invested in maintaining comfortable, convenient falsehood.
